Custom Foot Orthotics
Custom foot orthotics are devices which are prescribed as a highly useful adjunct to manual therapy and strengthening programs. Orthotics can be used to help manage a number of foot and leg conditions as they promote more even foot positioning and distribution of plantar pressures. The orthotics help to the position the feet in more of a neutral alignment, which helps to promote efficiency and stability in gait. Pod Fit are known for their use of more flexible foot inserts, which are well liked and prove great results compared to hard, rigid orthotics.
What are custom made orthotics?
Custom made orthotics are medical devices which are prescribed by your Podiatrist. They work to keep your feet in a more optimal alignment, to keep you stable and well supported throughout walking and running. Custom orthotics are made specifically for your individual feet, and can be customised as required even after they are manufactured. They are made of polypropylene or EVA (ethyl-vinyl-acetate).
How do they work?
The most common method for an orthotic prescription is to balance out the foot to the most "ideal" or "neutral" position. The way, the device is helping your body to be in efficient alignment from the ground up. As you can imagine, any deviations from neutral or vertical means that the body has to work harder to keep moving well.
For example, a foot rolling in requires the body to work harder to keep the foot rolled out and straight -this is where an orthotic comes in. The orthotic will keep the feet exactly where they should ideally be positioned.
Can I wear them in all of my shoes?
Our belief is that a good foundation of supportive footwear is ideal when it comes to orthotic therapy. Most but not all shoes will cater an orthotic.. Sneakers generally will almost always cater for an orthotic to be inserted into the shoe. Sports orthotics are also available, which we regularly fit into soccer and football boots. For dress shoes, there are options available including narrower fitting and s-hook shape orthotics. There are some shoes which may not be suitable for orthotic treatment, these may include some ballet flats or open footwear. Your Podiatrist can guide you with footwear options.
How long do they last for?
Generally custom orthotics will last for up to 5 years or longer. The shell itself is long lasting and often the soft covering is all that may require more changing once a year or so. If a softer material like EVA is used for the shell of the device, the orthotics tend to last for 3 years or so. Frequency of use, body weight and activities performed can all impact the life of your orthotic. We offer GAP-FREE remakes each year with private cover.
